A Signed Title IS the Sale

A California Certificate of Title with the registered owner's signature in the Release of Interest section is a legally complete transfer document. This is California Vehicle Code — not a matter of opinion.

There is no additional document, notarization, witness, power of attorney, or seller presence required by California law when the title is signed, the vehicle is paid off, and there is no lienholder. A signed pink slip is a live negotiable document — like an endorsed check.

Common Claims — Fact-Checked

FALSE: "I need a Power of Attorney from the owner."
A POA is NOT required when the title is already signed with all seller fields completed. The DMV processes transfers based on the signatures on the title, not who hands it over. CVC §§5750, 5900–5902
FALSE: "The title should be transferred to the selling agent's name first."
This would trigger unnecessary transfer fees, use tax (7.25%+ of fair market value), and weeks of DMV processing — for zero legal benefit. A signed title transfers directly from the registered owner to the buyer.
FALSE: "The registered owner needs to be present."
The seller does not need to be at the DMV. The buyer takes the signed title and submits it. CVC §§5900–5902
FALSE: "A signed title isn't enough to complete a sale."
The CA DMV states: "Private sale / loan payoff: Seller/lienholder signs title. Buyer submits to DMV." That is the entire process.
TRUE: "A smog certificate is required."
Yes. The vehicle passed smog in November 2025. A current certificate will be provided prior to sale. Buyer covers the smog check cost ($50–$75) as a condition of this sale. CVC §24007(b), H&SC §44015
